Whoever kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death on the testimony of witnesses; ………. So you shall not pollute the land where you are; for blood defiles the land, and no atonement can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed on it, except by the blood of him who shed it. Therefore do not defile the land which you inhabit, in the midst of which I dwell; for I the Lord dwell among the children of Israel.'” NKJV
Outside the British Parliament the statue of ‘God’s Englishmen’ the well-warted Oliver Cromwell, stands sturdy and rock like above a lion at the base of it’s plinth. Cromwell’s right hand rests on his drawn sword and his left hand clutches the Holy Bible. Within the Palace of Westminster, I have seen the actual death warrant for King Charles 1st and noted that Cromwell’s was the third signature of the fifty nine appended thereto. Why did he sign it?
One undoubted reason was to end the Civil wars. It could be said that Charles 1st had already plunged the country into a 2nd Civil war and that therefor Cromwell, would see to it that he should not do so again. Cromwell was a Puritan and man of the Holy Scriptures, and some say that he had had his conscience ameliorated by a previous preaching and address to Parliament by the Puritan Divine, Thomas Brooks, who had quoted to them all our text for this night from Numbers 35:33 which reads,
“So you shall not pollute the land where you are; for blood defiles the land, and no atonement can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed on it, except by the blood of him who shed it.” NKJV
So then, some would say that when murder is inflicted upon the innocent then the righteous must rise up against such murder and such murderers and cleanse the land by doing away with them. Some would say that though we are most definitely not Israel and God is not in the midst of us, a land drenched with the bloody guilt of such murderers is under the curse of God. Some others have suggested, for example, that if Christians had risen up and done away with Hitler earlier rather than later, that millions could have been saved from brutal destruction and fates worse than death.
I put it to you then that four big questions arise from these serious considerations:
First, where the State is in league with the devil in justifying the murder of the righteous, do Christians then have a responsibility to cleanse the land by ensuring the legal deaths of the perpetrators of such murder? Second, to ensure the legal dispatch of such murderers should Christians engage in armed civil war against both the murders and State who have become the licensed perpetrators of the same? In other words, is armed resistance and bloody overthrow an allowable precursor to the removal of evil and the establishment of righteousness? Third, if we do nothing to stop the spread of such murder and martyrdom are we complicit in such crimes? Fourth, if we do not, before God, seek to cleanse our own land, will He through terrible fire cleanse both it and us all along with it?
Where the gun is not yet at our door, such considerations of answers to such questions might be considered far-fetched and fanciful. Unfortunately, I know that I am writing these Everyday Bible Insights for a people who maybe have had by now the gun at the door and the knife at their throat. Their children may have been taken from them, never to be returned again. Indeed, millions of babies may have been vivisected from the womb and their body parts sold on the open market for profit. I wonder if Sodom now rules, Babylon controls, and everyone now does what is right in their own eyes in the foreboding days of Noah. Who knows, you might by now be in fear of even your liberty and your life. I wonder when these days shall be upon us?
I have said it before and I shall say it again, each man’s response to these questions is in accordance with his own conscience before the Word of God. For those that want to suffer for righteousness without a fight, then I join my prayers with your headless and under the throne imploring’s to the Lord for both for vengeance and retribution. “How long O Lord?” For those of you who choose to fight, I say this, that those who live by the sword must be prepared to die by the sword, therefore be prepared. Even so, fight righteously and fight to win.
I am in some personal danger in writing these things as the interpretation and application of present UK legislation might class me as a terrorist, indeed, in the USA in some areas of their population control, even their founding fathers have now been reclassified as the same. In the UK I might be classified as an hate preacher. I am. So I say to you very clearly, hate evil. Hate very evil. With sadness, I have to tell you that the government in the UK nor the USA has no present need to fear this statement for where are the Fairfax’s, Manchester’s and Cromwell’s of today? Where is General Washington? I would to God that they had some cause to fear for it might stop all this unrighteousness and uncleanness.
In my own mind the choice is clear. Be ground into the dust or be prepared to resist. Whatever your choice before God, be prepared and get prepared.
As for me, I choose to fight and presently am fighting with those weapons at hand accorded to me. My voice, my vote and my present day freedom to exercise them both.
Listen: My eye has also grown dim because of sorrow, And all my members are like shadows. Upright men are astonished at this, And the innocent stirs himself up against the hypocrite. Yet the righteous will hold to his way, And he who has clean hands will be stronger and stronger. Job 17:7-9 NKJV
“This work was too high for me; and, as it is now done by so weak a hand, is too low for so many judicious eyes to look down to. Yet, according to your command, I have published these notes, which I humbly present to you. They were once in your ear, they are now in your eye, and may the Lord ever keep them in your hearts! Solomon bids us “buy the truth,” but does not tell us what it must cost, because we must get it, though it be ever so dear. We should love it both shining and scorching. The desire of my soul is, that you may deal so with those truths which here in all humbleness is presented to you. Oh, that we may be all doers of the word, and not hearers only, lest we deceive our own souls! When I stood upon my watch to see what the Lord would say unto me, that I might speak unto you a word in season, that is, with a due concurrence and observation of all circumstances, of time, place, people, etc., He directed me to make this discovery of upright hearts’ progress in the ways of God, notwithstanding all afflictions, etc., which befall them; which gives me hope that God intended to send home into your hearts some light and influence from this truth, to encourage and keep up your spirits against all the opposition which you may find in the cause of God and the kingdom, and to maintain your zeal and forwardness therein, that justice and judgment may run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.”
Presented in a Sermon before the House of Commons at their last monthly Fast, London, December 26, 1648, by Thomas Brooks.
Pray: Amen, and it be so.
