Ezekiel 1:10 | As for the likeness of their faces, each had the face of a man; each of the four had the face of a lion on the right side, each of the four had the face of an ox on the left side, and each of the four had the face of an eagle. NKJV
Carrs flour mill sits on the old harbor in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, on the edge of the North sea. It receives grain for grinding both by road and sea. It is alive with pounding.
As you can imagine, the birds of the air can find rich pickings on the ground of this mill and therefore hundreds of watching pigeons all flock around the stainless steel towers of this impressive edifice. No doubt, the dirt of their presence is a problem both to health and to the operation of machinery.
To counter this pigeon infestation, for that is what is, high on the storage towers a large unmanned fiberglass fishing rod casts a line, at the end of which is a kite, a brown raptor shaped bird kite. It is an impressive sight for when the wind gets up, and my oh my, it always ‘gets up,’ the raptor kite bird is lifted high and hovers over the mill like an ever present predatorial shadow. Does it keep the pigeons away? No, not at all. Indeed, they rest under its non-threatening wings in there hundreds. They know it is not real.
I walked around the corner of my building the other morning, directly across from the flour mill, and our eyes met. We both, for a few moments, stared at each other. The dark disc like eyes of the very large and very much alive raptor stared into mine. It stood atop a very fat pigeon who lay on its back with its pink legs curled in the air. It was being eaten alive. Its feathers were already strewn beneath it on the green, green grass and it lay there silently, making no pointless nor fruitless noise. In the next second, two things happened at the same time. First, the raptor judged me to a be a threat and like some modern jet, it took off vertically into the air, whilst at the same time, its prey rolled over, took to the wing and flew right under my nose, racing to the open sea. Around my building, I often find a few feathers in a morning. I rarely find any pigeons. You see, if you want to keep the pigeons away, you need a real raptor, not some flimsy imitation hung high on a fiber glass rod.
Many of you have not been serious about ridding yourselves of your pet pigeon sins. Consequently, they not only remain but also bring their friends home with them. Some of you who are demonized, have had the same experience of the multiple infestation of a number of foul spirits. That show of repentance, that external mock holiness which you have held high for all the world to see, has no talons in it nor ripping beak and it is not hungry to be rid of the presence of that flock of sinful pigeons which steals the bread of life from you.
One representation of the Gospel, and I would like to suggest of the Holy Spirit, is that of the Eagle. We forget this. A dove might well be the emblem of peace for which we can be thankful, but alongside those other emblematic tongues of fire indicative of communicating this Gospel of peace to the whole world, are a pair of ripping talons, that will tear your sins to shreds.
Upon my right arm I have tattooed an old blue inky eagle. It is but a dead picture, the colors of its feathers having long dissipated into my ageing lymphatic system. However, upon my right shoulder there sits another Eagle. He is the King of birds, He is God the Holy Spirit, the guardian of my soul. He is neither hooded nor tethered in my being, neither ignored nor quenched. Therefore he freely roams the skies of my spirit and swoops on every foul thought and thing that dares to come into my life. He eats my sins alive.
How can the all-seeing God be hooded in our lives? How can the ever-present God be tethered in our spirits? How can the all-powerful God have His feathers plucked from His wings? How can His rapacious hunger for holiness with us be quenched? I confess I do not know the answer as to why, I just know these things can indeed be so.
For me to say the following sounds blasphemous, but though I confess I say them in ignorance, I must say them nevertheless. Friends, some of you have forgotten this face of God the Holy Spirit, the face of the Eagle. Many of you have tethered Him and have hooded Him, silenced Him and quenched Him. Enough! Repent of this cowardice, yes, turn from these ‘complicities’ with the devil and all the works of darkness right now, for your skies are full of fat pigeons who have plundered your grain for years. Un-hood the Holy Spirit, un-tether Him now and let Him have free range of your skies.
Do you want to be free? Do you want to be holy? Then let the blood and let the feathers fly once more!
Listen: Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. (1 Thessalonians 5:14-19 NKJV)
Pray: Father, sanctify me wholly, body soul and spirit. Rid me of my fat pigeon sins. I do not understand how little me an quench you Almighty God the Holy Spirit, but I can. I am Yours, what permission do you need from me to examine my heart and roam my internal skies. With my obedience to Your word and my prayerful supplication for your mercy, come and rip my sins to shreds. Come and eat them all alive, that I might truly be alive to You. Amen and let it be so.
