“Therefore you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Drink, be drunk, and vomit! Fall and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you.”‘ And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “You shall certainly drink! For behold, I begin to bring calamity on the city which is called by My name, and should you be utterly unpunished? You shall not be unpunished, for I will call for a sword on all the inhabitants of the earth,” says the Lord of hosts.’ NKJV
The infamous act of ‘waterboarding’ has been made famous worldwide as the primary tool of American torture. This is where water is poured over a cloth which is covering the face and airways of a bound and beaten prisoner, thus forcing the object of torture to experience the sensation of perpetual drowning. In our text for tonight, Jeremiah is told to ‘Wineboard’ all the reluctant and rebellious nations, to forcibly get them drunk and have them vomiting on the poured out wrath of the Lord. To those nations who refuse His terrible judgements, who refuse to voluntary drink the wine of His fury, God says “And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “You shall certainly drink!”
I, to my shame, when serving in the Royal Navy, have been many times drunk. Very drunk and vomiting. I have also witnessed other people very drunk and vomiting, and there is with this situation a complete and utter helplessness to those so thoroughly intoxicated., there is a tottering, a collapsing and a falling, followed by the passing out and unconscious immobilization of the binged up lunatic.
Read on in our text for tonight and you will find that when Jeremiah extends his ‘wineboarding’ from Judah to the all the nations of the earth, that he switches from prose to poetry. They need to memorize and remember this most dreadful dirge It is as though God in starting to judge Jerusalem, and those nations around that now horrible hub of unhappy rebellion, that He cannot stop Himself in venting globally. Once judgement begins in the house of God, He cannot help but go on to do a clean sweep of all. Therefore, the Lion of Judah has now been awakened and while He is up and ‘at ‘em’ it is as though He says, “Well, now I’m up, riled and roaring, let’s get the whole job done!” The roar of this Lion would now stir up an all-encompassing twister, a huge hurricane, a global catastrophic wind of judgement against every nation which God has legal contentions with concerning the breaking of His law, the murder of His saints and the rape of His grace. Death, destruction and desolation are the end products of this roaring storm which shall foam forth from the bare teethed mouth of the Lion of Judah. All the earths self-indulgent God rejecting ‘rock and rolling’ would now turn to nothing but rocking and reeling.
When Peter tried to protect Jesus from His being unlawfully arrested, the Lord said to him “Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?” ( John 18:9 KJV) To drink the cup given by God then, is a symbol of submission to the very will of God. Jeremiah, the prophet to the nation’s, had somehow communicated to each nation’s ambassador the necessity to submit to God’s judgements and be comparatively safe, secured, and somewhat preserved. or to rebel against God’s judgments and with that be utterly destroyed. We do not know how he did this, and I have no time for ‘perhapsing’ tonight, ( I shall leave a mass banquet picture with you) suffice to say, that he communicated this action message well. The message was clear, ‘If the nations did not submit to God’s judgments then He would have a global ‘shit-fest.’ “ Laid end to end, those killed in God’s judgment that day will stretch from one end of the earth to the other. No tears will be shed and no burials conducted. The bodies will be left where they fall, like so much horse dung fertilizing the fields. (Jeremiah 25:33 from THE MESSAGE) God will have clean clay pots to His glory, else He shall smash them all to pieces.
Church. Remnant. let us put our own house in order. In this darkening night let us trust in the Lord with all of our heart and lean not on our own understanding. Let us in all our ways acknowledge His Lordship, love and care, His righteous acts and judgments, and have Him direct our paths by making right roads rise up to meet us
Let me be wrong, Oh God let me be so wrong. Let my cowardice and the smallness of size rightly brand me as nothing but ‘ little chicken,’ even a ‘Chicken Little.’ Oh God let me have the embarrassment and shame of being wrong, for friends, this ‘Shit-fest’ is coming and the wine-boarding is about to begin.
God’s Kingdom must now begin to manifest itself. The submission to Gods will means the drinking of this cup. Drink this cup. Taste the bitterness of it. Now then, get ready, by all means and in every way, for that which is to come upon us.
Listen: “Therefore prophesy against them all these words, and say to them: ‘The Lord will roar from on high, And utter His voice from His holy habitation; He will roar mightily against His fold. He will give a shout, as those who tread the grapes, Against all the inhabitants of the earth. 31 A noise will come to the ends of the earth — For the Lord has a controversy with the nations; He will plead His case with all flesh. He will give those who are wicked to the sword,’ says the Lord.” Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Behold, disaster shall go forth From nation to nation, And a great whirlwind shall be raised up From the farthest parts of the earth. “And at that day the slain of the Lord shall be from one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth. They shall not be lamented, or gathered, or buried; they shall become refuse on the ground. (Jeremiah 25:30-33 NKJV)
Pray: Lord, why do the nations rage, and the people plot in vain against You? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against You the Lord and against Your Anointed Son our Savior Jesus , saying, “Let us break their bonds in pieces and cast away their cords from us.” Yet, He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; You, yes, even You O God shall hold them in derision. Then You shall speak to them in Your wrath, and distress them in Your deep displeasure: “Yet You have set Your King On Your holy hill of Zion saying to Him, “’You are My Son, today I have begotten You. Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession.” Therefore Lord Jesus, Loin of Judah, righteous judge, You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel. O God, give the leaders of this earth wisdom and let them be wise, and ready to learn. BE merciful to them and lead them to serve You O Lord with fear, and to rejoice with trembling. May they in relief, thankfulness and humility, kiss the Son, lest He be angry with them and they perish in the way, when Your wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in You. O Lord, help me to put my trust in You. (adapted from Psalm 2).
