“And like their bow they have bent their tongues for lies. They are not valiant for the truth on the earth. For they proceed from evil to evil, And they do not know Me,” says the Lord. NKJV
Remember that the Separatists came from the Puritans. Indeed, Cromwell was a Separatist. These Non-Conforming Independent, English Protestants separated themselves from the corruption of the Church of England and formed independent gatherings of simple local churches, which they believed were formed by, and therefore should be directed by God the Holy Spirit, and not by any person or state. It was therefore both the right and responsibility of each congregation to determine its own affairs, without having to submit those decisions to the judgment of any other authority, especially Bishops!. These Separatist were neither arrogant nor haughty, disrespectful nor belligerent, yet there belief in the plane reading of Scripture led them to be Valiant for the Truth of God’s word no matter what the cost. I believe that the first of the twelve marks of the New Separatists of the End-time church is that we too are ‘Valiant for Truth.’
To be valiant is to be boldly courageous, yes, it is to be courageous and BOLDLY so! It is to be intrepid and determinedly brave, it is to be in the Vanguard of the charge, and the rearguard of the withdrawal. It is to be first to put your feet on the battleground, it is to be the last to take it off again. To be Valiant for truth is not so much an apologetic calling so as to try and defend a let loose Lion, but rather, it is to ride that Lion and Him take you wherever He will, no matter what or who might stand in your path. To be Valiant for Truth is to obey the word of God and it is to proclaim the whole counsel of God no matter what the cost, and oh my goodness today my friends, there is quite the price to pay.
Born in 1575, at Sturton-le-Steeple, John Robinson, was an English Puritan minister who came to be called the pastor of the Pilgrim Fathers as guided their Pre- American sojourn and was used of God in their spiritual formation. In 1602 Robinson became a curate at St. Andrew’s Church, Norwich but his refusal to conform to the Anglican anti-Puritan decrees of 1604 led to his suspension from preaching, around 1606 he eventually joined the Separatist congregation at the small town of Scrooby. He led the congregation he served to Amsterdam and then to Leiden where they grew to about 300 in number. His death prevented him joining the stalwarts of his flock in America. Even so, his departing sermon to them as a great Separatist Pastor contains these two great statements of note First that, “The Lutherans cannot be drawn to go beyond what Luther saw. Whatever part of His will our God has revealed to Calvin, they (Lutherans) will rather die than embrace it; and the Calvinists, you see, stick fast where they were left by that great man of God, who yet saw not all things. This is a misery much to be lamented.” Seconds that, “I Charge you before God and his blessed angels that you follow me no further than you have seen me follow Christ. If God reveal anything to you by any other instrument of His, be as ready to receive it as you were to receive any truth from my ministry, for I am verily persuaded the Lord hath more truth and light yet to break forth from His holy word.”……. …… “for I am verily persuaded the Lord hath more truth and light yet to break forth from His holy word.” Do you see that! I Separatist is ready to keep riding the Lion of God’s word. To be a New Separatist then is to be immediately obedient to ever increasing illuminations of God’s Holy Word, no matter what the cost. Indeed, did not that other ‘Valiant for Truth’ Separatist, John Bunyan, reply to the magistrate who would have set him free if he promised not to preach reply saying that he “would rather remain in prison until moss grew on his eyelids than fail to do what God commanded!”
There is a cost to being Valiant for Truth, and to be sure, your face shall always be a little bloodied. Bunyan knew that the Word of God was a weapon of the destruction of falsehoods and every institution built upon it for we carry a double edge sword and wield it! Indeed, we find it to be a true ‘New Jerusalem Blade.’ Bunyan has his character ‘Valiant for Truth’ describing it saying “Let a man have one of these Blades, with a Hand to wield it and Skill to use it, and he may venture upon an Angel with it. He need not fear its holding, if he can but tell how to lay on. Its edges will never blunt. It will cut flesh and bones and soul and spirit and all1”
To be Valiant for truth is to know the Word of God, to possess the Word of God and have it possess you thoroughly, it is to wield the word of God and above all, it is to obey the Word of God. Anyone possessing this mind set and possessed by it, shall fear neither men, not demons nor death. Look how Bunyan described the departure e his character ‘Valiant for Truth for the New Jerusalem. “ After this it was noised abroad that Mr Valiant-for-truth was taken with a Summons by the same Post as the other, and had this for a Token that the Summons was true, That his Pitcher was broken at the Fountain. When he understood it, he called for his Friends, and told them of it. Then said he, I am going to my Fathers, and tho’ with great difficulty I am got hither, yet now I do not repent me of all the Trouble I have been at to arrive where I am. My Sword I give to him that shall succeed me in my Pilgrimage, and my Courage and Skill to him that can get it. My Marks and Scars I carry with me, to be a witness for me that I have fought his Battles who now will be my Rewarder. When the day that he must go hence was come, many accompanied him to the Riverside, into which as he went he said, Death, where is thy Sting? And as he went down deeper he said, Grave, where is thy Victory? So he passed over, and all the Trumpets sounded for him on the other side.”
The first mark of the new Separatist is that they know the Word of God and are possessed by it to such an extent that they are immediately obedient to it, no matter what the cost.
You can be a New Separatist. You can be Valiant for Truth, should you become a true Pilgrim and have the courage to take it up and the skill to begin to wield it in your life.
Get into the Word of God and get the Word of God into you., eat that book! All 66 of them.
Listen: The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked came against me To eat up my flesh, My enemies and foes, They stumbled and fell. Though an army may encamp against me, My heart shall not fear; Though war may rise against me, In this I will be confident. One thing I have desired of the Lord, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord, And to inquire in His temple. (Psalm 27:1-4 NKJV)
Pray: Father, help me to fear your displeasure more than loneliness. Help me to beware of disappointing you rather than seeking the approval of others. Help me to speedily and without hesitation obey Your most Holy Word and then learn by it, then grow by it, then become more than a conqueror through Christ. Father give me my very own New Jerusalem Blade! Amen and let it be so.
